Garden: Heliconia

Heliconia has just become my favorite flower .. the flower of the season … a symbol of Spring and Easter and New Beginnings. I’d never really noticed them before this one planted itself right underneath our bedroom window. It grew rapidly and burst into flower just before the Spring Equinox and Easter (and my mother’s birthday).

I love the way it erupts into a volcano of colour all around its middle.

I love the way the flower elongates each day, petal by petal like a vine full of happy birds.

I love the colours … the bright gold and rich juicy melon, all accented by a wisp of parrot green. As a matter of fact, it reminds me of R2D2, our parrot!

This flower is full of symbology!!

I also love the relationship between the heliconia and the ever-present ants. I’m not sure yet what it means, but I just know it’s interesting.

I love everything about this gorgeous flower. I’m going to watch it grow and spread and look forward each year to its vibrant message of New Beginnings!! I see it as a blessing that it appeared unexpectedly in a place where it is the first thing i see when i open my eyes in the morning.
